Lasers are used in all areas of our lives. For example, a laser is being used every time an item is scanned at the grocery store. The classification of the laser will dictate how it can be used.
We use a CO2 cutting laser for all of our surgeries. We also have a laser that we use for non-invasive therapy as a way to help comfort animals that have pain or discomfort.
Our therapy laser is a class IV low-level light laser. It is sometimes referred to as a “Cold Laser”. Its use is for the delivery of energy to the mitochondria of cells. This helps the cells to:
- Reduce inflammation
- Speed healing
- Lessen pain
Of course we are all aware of the use of medications to accomplish these 3 goals. However, the use of laser can act synergistically with any medication. For those animals, that may not be able to take certain medications, this can be a real lifesaver.
Examples of when to use the laser include but are not limited to
- Arthritic joints
- Wounds
- Infections
- Burns
- Fractures
- Lick granulomas
- Post operative pain
- Cystitis
- Snake bites
- Any painful area (except the eyes or genitals)
Also prohibited is the use of the laser on areas of cancer or in cancer patients or with pregnancy.
Treatments take on average 5–15 minutes for one area. The feel of the laser is simply warm and soothing. There are no known side affects of the laser. You and your pet may be asked to wear our protective eye-wear. The treatments are cumulative so you will typically be asked to return twice weekly. As the condition improves the treatments will be weekly, bi-weekly then monthly if needed.
