With summer finally here family vacation plans are a top priority. If you’re a pet parent, finding the right facility to care for your “fur child” in your absence will be first and foremost on your list of things to do.
Here are the top 3 things to consider when selecting a boarding facility for your beloved family member.
Are there Vaccination Requirements?
Any reputable boarding facility will require a minimum of Rabies, Distemper/Parvo and Bordetella. Some may even take the extra precautionary step and require Canine Influenza as well. Always check with the facility you are considering regarding the vaccine policies. Ensure your pet’s vaccines are current and on file prior to your arrival so as to avoid any potential delays at check-in.
How Clean is the Boarding Facility?
The pet care facility you choose should look well maintained and smell clean. I should be well lit and properly ventilated. Tours should be provided by request and the areas in which the dogs board should have fresh and clean bedding with water bowls at all times.
Although unfamiliar faces can create some barking amongst the current guests, the overall demeanor of the guests should be calm and relaxed. Dogs who are being properly cared for will easily settle into the routine of the facility and stress levels will be diminished or non-existent.
Does the Staff Truly Care?
The pet care staff should be knowledgeable and caring. Although cats and dogs cannot literally “talk”, you should get a sense from your pet that they feel comfortable and secure in the hands of the boarding staff.
The pet care staff should be engaging with both you and your pet; leaving you with a sense that your pet will be truly loved and cared for in your absence. The more information the staff asks you for, the better. Be sure they take proper notes regarding feeding instructions, medications and any other requests you have for the care of your pet.
